ROCKAWAY – THE NEW CENTER OF BROWNSVILLE

This project is to re-design Rockaway Avenue to be the center of Brownsville. Today Rockaway Avenue is preserved as a physiological boundary marked by high criminal activity that separates the neighborhood. As one major road along the three NYCHA superblocks, it has vacant lots, unused NYCHA landscape areas, and different parking lots that can be utilized to rebuild a new image of Brownsville.
Our strategy is to take advantage of the convenient transportations on Rockaway Avenue to redefine the street edges as a whole integrated system. By creating a commercial zone, a civic center and a service center, the project will provide NYCHA residence and the rest of the community a new space that will recreate the perception of Brownsville. This projects aims to build new public squares providing cultural activities, new job and education opportunities to improve the quality of life of its residents.
